Syria-Turkey tension conspired by US: Velayati
Senior Iranian official Ali Akbar Velayati says the ongoing tension between Turkey and Syria is a plot hatched by the US and its allies in order to disturb stability of the region.
“The Americans want to disturb stability of regional countries,” the senior advisor to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said on Wednesday.
“The Westerners first entered Syria under the pretext of supporting democracy and popular protests but gradually tried to arm the opposition though the people of this country opposed them,” Velayati added.
The Iranian official said the US wants to destroy the anti-Israeli resistance front in Syria by sending terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda and Blackwater to the country.
Velayati said when the US and certain Arab countries could not achieve their objectives regarding Damascus through politics and by issuing resolutions against Damascus at various organizations, they deployed NATO forces to Syria’s borders.
Tensions have been running high between Syria and Turkey, with Damascus blaming Turkey -- along with Saudi Arabia and Qatar -- for backing a deadly insurgency that has claimed the lives of many Syrians, including security and army personnel.
On Saturday, Turkey deployed tanks and armored vehicles along its border with Syria as the Turkish military continued pounding targets inside the Arab country for the fourth day, claiming the attack was in response to a mortar bomb that crashed into a village of Yayladagi town in the southern province of Hatay.
On Thursday, the Turkish parliament authorized cross-border military action against Syria “when deemed right.”
